Dr. Kent Tan is a highly experienced professional at My Implant Dentist, a recognised clinic for dental implants in Perth. We provide the highest quality care for teeth implants.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are designed to replace missing teeth by mimicking the natural structure of a tooth.
The dental implant post (or anchor) is made of titanium, a biocompatible material, and serves as an artificial tooth root. Your dentist will anchor the implant screw surgically into your jawbone. Over time, the bone fuses with the implant in a process known as osseointegration, ensuring stability. This process usually takes between 3 and 6 months.
Each dental implant consists of three main components:
- Implant Fixture: The titanium post is a screw that acts as the tooth root. My Implant Dentist uses Neodent or Southern dental implant brands.
- Abutment: Connects the implant fixture to the crown.
- Crown: Made from Emax (Lithium Disilicate) or zirconia, the crown is the visible part that replicates the appearance and function of a natural tooth.
Dental implants can replace a single missing tooth, multiple adjacent teeth, or even all of the teeth on the upper or lower jaw via All-on-4® . This adaptability makes them suitable for individual tooth restoration as well as comprehensive full-mouth rehabilitation. Additionally, dental implants can support dental bridges and secure dentures, enhancing the stability of other dental prostheses.
Dental implants (screw-in teeth) are considered the gold standard for tooth replacement because they provide a strong foundation for the dental prosthesis and have superior longevity. Patient satisfaction scores are also higher for dental implants compared to other teeth replacement alternatives.
Dental Implants Perth Before & After Images
All-on-4 dental implants before and after the procedure
- Single Tooth Dental Implant (one missing tooth)
As the name implies, a single tooth dental implant is typically used to replace one tooth that is missing. The implant is placed in the jawbone to support the new tooth with this option. The dentist will then place the new tooth on the dental implant.
- All-on-4 Dental Implants (multiple missing teeth)
All-on-4 dental implants are dental implants that you can use to support a full set of false teeth. The implants are placed in the jawbone and act as anchors for the false teeth. The All-on-4 dental implants are a great option for people who have multiple missing teeth.
- Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures are dentures that are attached to dental implants. The implants are usually made of titanium and are placed in the jawbone. The implants act as anchors for the dentures and help keep them in place.
- Bone Grafting
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that replaces missing bone to repair bone fractures that cannot heal properly on their own. The bone graft may be taken from another area of the patient’s body, or it may be a synthetic substitute.
Benefits of Dental Implants
- Near-permanent tooth replacement
- More natural-looking and functioning
- Improved ability to eat and chew
- Enhanced aesthetics, speech, and confidence
- Avoid bone loss
- Preserve adjacent teeth
- Long-term durability; 20+ years with proper care
- Increased comfort and convenience
- Versatility – multiple treatment options
Dental Implant Procedure at My Implant Dentist
Note: The dental implant procedure is typically performed by General Dentists (implantologists), Oral Surgeons, Periodontists, or Prosthodontists and generally requires several visits.
-
Initial consultation and planning
Your first consultation will include a thorough examination of your oral health. Our Perth dental implants practitioner will examine your mouth, and take digital photographs and X-rays. The examination will allow your dentist to diagnose any underlying issues, determine the goals of the implant treatment, and decide on the best treatment approach for your specific needs and oral health requirements.
Our team will always take your opinions and requirements into account, so don’t be shy. We’re the experts, but we want you to be involved in the entire process. Your dentist will develop and explain your personalised treatment plan in this initial consultation, as well as the associated costs and risks.
Notably, My Implant Dentist has three flexible payment options, which your dentist will discuss with you. You will then have all the facts and figures you need to make an informed decision, and choose the treatment approach that best suits your budget and goals.
-
Implant placement surgery
It’s normal to feel a bit anxious about your surgery, but you won’t feel any pain. The surgical phase is always performed under local anaesthesia. We offer Sleep Dentistry in addition to local anaesthetic if you are feeling anxious about the procedure:
- A small incision is made in the gums to expose the jawbone.
- Your dental surgeon will drill a hole into the jawbone to make room for the implant.
- The implant is then inserted or “screwed” into the hole.
- The incision in the gums is closed with stitches around the implant.
This phase typically takes about one hour, with the initial post-surgery recovery period lasting approximately one week. Your implant dentist will also give you instructions for post-operative maintenance and care. You must follow these instructions very carefully to avoid unnecessary pain and discomfort, and to ensure the success of your surgery.
-
Healing period
After your implant is placed, it will fuse with the bone through a process known as osseointegration. This process takes 3 to 6 months. This fusion between implant and bone needs to take place before it can be used to support the dental prosthesis.
Once osseointegration is complete, you’re ready for your dentist to attach the implant crown. Our dental implants Professional Perth will thoroughly check your osseointegration process before attaching the abutment and crown.
Notably, implants in the lower jawbone will osseointegrate faster than implants in the upper jaw, but this process will still take at least three months.
-
Abutment and crown attachment
The final phase of dental implant treatment is the prosthetic phase. This stage involves the placement of the abutment and the implant crown. The abutment connects the implant to the crown, which is the artificial tooth that will be visible above the gum line. Your dentist usually performs this phase, and it generally takes two visits to complete.
The first visit involves taking an impression to register the position of the dental implant fixture in relation to the adjacent teeth. These measurements are sent to our in-house dental laboratory, where your crown will be manufactured. During your second visit, the crown and abutment will be placed onto the dental implant. Now, you will be able to eat, speak, and smile with confidence!
-
Maintenance
The last phase of the dental implant treatment is the maintenance phase. It’s important to note that maintenance is a shared responsibility between the patient and their dentist.
My Implant Dentist will arrange check-ups and regular cleanings with you to maintain your dental implants. These follow-up appointments will be scheduled with your dentist every 6 months. Crucially, at-home oral hygiene must be performed twice a day.

This has also helped us to save our patients the extra costs involved with third-party labs.
Types of Dental Implants
Single Tooth Dental Implants
My Implant Dentist offers single tooth dental implants, a type of dental implant that is used to replace a single missing teeth. The implant consists of a titanium screw placed into the jawbone, which acts as a replacement for the tooth root. An abutment and dental implant crown are then placed on top of the implant to act as the new tooth.
Single dental implants have a success rate of over 95% worldwide. Additionally, they can last for at least 20 years with the proper care, making them a great long-term option.
Dental Implant Bridge
A fixed implant bridge (or implant-supported bridge) can replace three missing teeth with two titanium dental implants. The fixed implant bridge is essentially a set of three artificial teeth designed to fit and perfectly fill the gap made by the missing teeth. This dental prosthesis is held in place by the dental implants. The bridge is made of zirconia and consists of three teeth, which have been milled using CAD-CAM technology.
All-on-4 Dental Implants
A very popular option for patients at My Implant Dentist is the All-on-4 dental implant treatment. These implants can be used to support a complete set of replacement teeth. As the name suggests, All-on-4 means a full arch of artificial teeth is supported by four implants. This procedure has many advantages, not least the fact that it offers easier lifelong maintenance.
After thorough examination and planning, your dentist will choose the optimum positions for your implants. Next, like other dental implants, the All-on-4 dental implants are placed in the jawbone in such a way that they can support an entire set of teeth. This makes All-on-4 ideal for people who have terminal teeth, or due to multiple missing teeth, are looking for a way to replace them with a new set of reliable teeth.
All-on-6 Dental Implants
The primary distinction between All-on-4 and All-on-6 implants is the number of implants; in an All-on-6 treatment, six implants are used rather than four. In general, most patients will be suitable candidates for the All-on-4 implant procedure.
Other differences between these two procedures include the number of artificial teeth that can be fitted – you will get 12 to 14 teeth per arch with All-on-6, or 10 to 12 teeth per arch with All-on-4. Your dentist may also suggest the All-on-6 treatment if you have a more forceful bite, as All-on-6 implants have superior force distribution.
Implant-Retained Dentures
Often referred to as implant-supported dentures, these dental prosthetics serve as a middle ground between traditional, removable dentures that use adhesive and the more expensive full-mouth dental implants. Like All-on-4 implants, these dentures are ideal for individuals who have lost all or almost all of their teeth on the lower or upper jaw. Implant-retained dentures offer a more stable and secure option for patients than traditional dentures.
My Implant Dentist offers three different types of implant-supported dentures: fixed, removable (aka, snap-in dentures), and implant-stabilised dentures. For more detailed information, have a look at our comprehensive guide to implant-supported dentures.
Disadvantages of Dental Implants
- High Cost (expensive)
- Suitability (not everyone is suitable for dental implants)
- Surgical risks (risk of infection)
- Lengthy recovery time (up to 4 month recovery for single dental implants)
- Risk of implant failure (2% failure rate)
Am I a Suitable Candidate for Dental Implants in Perth?
Your dental implant will conduct a thorough initial examination and design the most suitable treatment plan for your specific needs – for free. So, while it’s best to consult directly with your dentist, there are some factors to bear in mind.
Firstly, dental implants have a 95–98% success rate when placed by qualified implant dentists. So, if you have missing teeth, you are very likely a good candidate for dental implants.
Secondly, even if you have low bone density and need bone grafting, suffer from gum disease or osteoporosis, or have a history of smoking, you may still be eligible for dental implants. Your one of the top Dental implant Practioner will go through your medical history with you and will alert you to any issues that could influence your implant procedure. My Implant Dentist offers multiple treatment options for dental implants, so we always develop individualized teeth replacement plans that work for you.

Risks and Potential Complications of Dental Implants
Infection
A rare occurrence is an infection near the dental implant site. Infections can happen during or after the implant surgery, and they can cause discomfort, swelling, and redness. Infections are usually a result of bad oral hygiene post-surgery, another reason why following your dentist’s post-operative instructions is crucial.
Nerve damage
During the surgical placement of the implant, the nerves in the surrounding area are at risk of being injured. This is another painful risk as nerve damage can result in pain, numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in the region of the implant site.
Sinus problems
When teeth in the upper jaw need to be replaced, the implant site may be exceptionally close to or even extend into the sinus cavity. This can trigger headaches and various sinus complications, such as a change in airflow and sinus infections.
Implant failure
If the implant does not adequately osseointegrate with the jawbone, this can result in implant failure. When this occurs, it’s usually not too difficult to remove and replace the implant, either right away or after a period of healing.
FAQs: Common Dental Implant Questions Answered
How painful is dental implant surgery?
Dental implant pain is often described as being less severe than the pain associated with tooth extraction. Modern anaesthetics and pain control techniques have made getting dental implants a relatively painless process.
You should not suffer from any acute pain, or pain and symptoms that persist longer than 10 days as you progress through the various stages of healing after surgery. If you do, contact your dentist immediately.
How to maintain dental implants?
With the proper care, your implant can last more than 20 years – maintenance is important for achieving this. You’ll need to practise at-home oral hygiene twice a day, which includes brushing and flossing. You’ll also need to attend regular check-ups with your dentist, eat healthily, and stop smoking.
