Dental Implants vs Crowns — Which Option Is Best For You

Key Takeaways:

  • Dental implants and crowns (bridges) are two common types of dental restorations used to replace missing or damaged teeth.
  • Choosing between dental implants and crowns depends on various factors, including the location of the missing or damaged tooth, the extent of the damage, and the overall oral health of the patient.
  • Choosing between dental implants and crowns involves considering various factors beyond just their advantages and disadvantages
  • Patients should consult with their dentist to determine one of the top course of treatment based on their individual needs and budget.
Dental Implants vs Crowns - Which Option is Best For You?

Dental implants and crowns are effective solutions for repairing or replacing damaged or missing teeth. A dental implant is a surgical procedure that involves inserting a titanium post into the jawbone, which acts as an artificial tooth root, making it an ideal choice for replacing a missing tooth. A crown is a cap that covers a damaged or decayed tooth, restoring its shape, size, and functionality. While implants provide a more long-term and structurally stable solution, crowns can be the preferred option when the existing tooth root is still viable.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a durable solution for replacing lost teeth. They are composed of a titanium root that is surgically anchored into the jawbone, and a custom-made crown that is affixed to this root.

The titanium root serves as a robust base, mimicking the function of a natural tooth root, while the crown replicates the visible part of a tooth. Together, they create a tooth replacement that not only appears natural but also performs like a real tooth, offering a reliable and long-term answer to tooth loss.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns, on the other hand, are used to restore damaged teeth. A crown is a cap that is custom-made to fit over a tooth that has been filed down. It is often used when a tooth is cracked, decayed, or worn down, but the root is still healthy. Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, and metal.

Pros And Cons Of Dental Implants And Crowns

Dental crowns and dental implants are two popular options for restoring damaged or missing teeth. While both offer their own unique set of benefits, there are also some drawbacks to consider.

Dental Implants

Advantages

  • Provide a more long-lasting solution compared to other dental restorations
  • Look and function like natural teeth
  • Provide stability and support to neighbouring teeth
  • Preserve the integrity of the jawbone
  • Easy to clean and maintain

Disadvantages

  • More expensive compared to other dental restorations
  • Requires surgery and a longer healing time
  • May not be suitable for patients with certain medical conditions or jawbone deficiencies

Dental Crowns

Advantages

  • Can restore the appearance and function of a damaged or decayed tooth
  • Protect a weakened tooth and prevent further damage
  • Less invasive compared to dental implants
  • Can be used in conjunction with a dental implant or bridge for a more comprehensive restoration

Disadvantages

  • May require the removal of a significant amount of the natural tooth structure
  • Do not provide the same level of stability and support as dental implants
  • May need to be replaced or repaired more frequently over time
  • May not be suitable for teeth with extensive damage or decay

Tooth Implant vs Crown Cost: Which Is More Affordable?

The cost of dental crowns and implants can vary depending on several factors. These factors include the location of the tooth, materials used, and the extent of the restoration needed.

In general, dental crowns (bridges) are more affordable than dental implants. Dental implants cost higher due to the surgical procedure involved and the need for a custom-made implant post.

On the other hand, dental crowns (bridges) require less time and resources to install, resulting in a lower overall cost. However, it is important to consider that dental implants can provide a more long-lasting solution, which makes them a more cost-effective option over time.

Patients should consult with their dentist to determine one of the top dental restoration option based on their individual needs and budget.

Crowns Or Implants For Front Teeth: Which Is More Suitable?

Dental implants are more suitable for front teeth when the tooth is missing or has extensive damage that requires extraction. This is because dental implants provide a more natural-looking and long-lasting solution, as they replace both the tooth and its root. In contrast, dental crowns are a more suitable option when the tooth is chipped or has minor damage that can be restored with a crown.

Dental crowns can be used to cover and protect the remaining tooth structure, restoring its shape, size, and appearance.

Broken Tooth – Crown Or Implant: Which Is The Better Option?

If the tooth is severely damaged or cannot be repaired with a dental filling or bonding, a dental implant may be the better option. This is because a dental implant replaces the entire tooth, including the root.

On the other hand, if the tooth has a minor chip or crack, a dental crown may be a better option. A dental crown can restore the tooth’s shape, size, and appearance while also protecting it from further damage.

Missing Teeth: Is A Crown Or Implant A Better Solution?

When it comes to replacing missing teeth, dental implants are a better option because they are permanent. The permanent nature of the implants provides stability and support to the surrounding teeth and preserves the integrity of the jawbone.

In contrast, a dental crown is used to restore a damaged or decayed tooth and is not designed to replace a missing tooth. While a dental crown can be used to cover a dental implant or a natural tooth adjacent to a missing tooth, it does not provide the same level of stability and support as a dental implant.

However, there are cases where a dental crown may be a suitable solution for replacing a missing tooth. This might be the case when the adjacent teeth are severely damaged and need to be restored with crowns.

Crown vs Implant vs Bridge: Which Dental Restoration Is Right For You?

Choosing between a bridge, dental crown or an implant depends on several factors which include the location of the missing or damaged tooth, the extent of the damage, and the overall oral health of the patient.

Dental Crowns

Crowns are used to restore damaged or decayed teeth. The dentist ensures the crown fits over the damaged tooth, providing protection and restoring the tooth’s shape, size, and appearance. Crowns are typically used when a tooth is still present but are too damaged to be repaired with a filling or dental bonding.

Dental Implants

Implants are used to replace a missing tooth. They consist of a titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone, which serves as a replacement for the tooth’s root. A custom-made dental crown is then attached to the post, providing a natural-looking and long-lasting solution. Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They consist of one or more artificial teeth, known as pontics, that are anchored in place by dental crowns on either side of the gap. Bridges are a suitable option when there are healthy teeth adjacent to the gap that can support the bridge.

The choice between a dental crown, implant, or bridge depends on the individual patient’s needs and preferences. Patients should consult with their dentist to determine one of the top course of treatment based on the location and extent of the damage or missing tooth, overall oral health, and budget.  Experience top-notch dental bridge solutions in Brisbane and Perth at My Implant Dentist, ensuring premium care and lasting results for your oral health.

FAQs

How Long Can I Wait To Get A Crown After Implant Surgery?

The length of time between implant surgery and crown placement depends on a variety of factors which include the patient’s healing process and the complexity of the case.

In some cases, a temporary crown may be placed immediately after implant surgery. However, in other cases, the implant may need several months to heal before the permanent crown can be placed.

How Is A Crown Attached To A Dental Implant?

A crown is typically attached to a dental implant using an abutment, which is a small connector piece that attaches to the implant and protrudes above the gumline.

The crown is then custom-made to fit over the abutment and blend in seamlessly with the surrounding teeth. It is secured to the abutment using dental cement or screws and the result is a stable, long-lasting restoration that looks and functions like a natural tooth.

Conclusion: Which Option Is Best For You?

Although both dental crowns and dental implants are great restorative dentistry options, they can be used depending on the patient’s situation. However, you should consult your dentist before deciding on which treatment to consider.

I was at a really low point in my life, had an accident 2 years ago which broke 3 of my teeth and a bridge in between my 2 front top teeth. From that moment I became extremely conscious of going out, socialising and found my self withdrawn and depressed as I didn't know what to do.Then a friend told me about My Implant Dentist. I plucked up the courage and went for my first consultation at Mindarie Quinns dental practice with Dr Zaheer who explained all my options and advised all on 4 top and bottom. Not only Dr Zaheer but all the staff and doctors at both Mindarie and South Perth were amazing and extremely professional and made the whole process seemless.Having the treatment has given me back confidence and enabled me to socalise and do things with my family and friends that I couldn't do before.I would like to thank Dr Zaheer and all the team at My Implant Dentist for everything they have done for me and recommended them to everyone I speak to.I just can't stop smiling!!!

I picked up”Moorooka Dental Care” contact details from the web. I rang for a few questions and the happy voice of Frances had calmed my anxiety down quickly!Dr Kadwa greeted me from the front bench, took me in for the X-ray, dental assessment, carefully explaining the procedure, answered my questions and quoted for the works. He offered to breakdown work items to suit with my needs. The quote was surprisingly very compatible with my previous quote from overseas. (I know I am going to have my dental treatment in the safe zone, most medical advances in Australia). The implant work went smoothly, so smooth that the team had to remind me “Done!”, well beyond my imagination. When he saw me off with the aftercare instructions, I could feel his professional manners with caring characters. I know he has done a few thousand implants but I still received the care of his first. Thanks Zaheer!I requested X-ray images, Fatimatu responded promptly with friendly chatting.I also would like to thank Dr Linh Trần who was in the operation team at the treatment and follow up cares.
