What to Eat After a Root Canal

Foods to Eat After a Root Canal

  • Soft foods: Soft foods are easy to chew and swallow and are less likely to irritate the treated tooth. Examples of soft foods include cooked vegetables, scrambled eggs, soups, and mashed fruits and vegetables.
  • Foods that are easy to chew: Foods that are easy to chew are also less likely to irritate the treated tooth and can be more comfortable to eat after a root canal. Examples of easy-to-chew foods include cooked pasta, rice, grains, and soft proteins like chicken and fish.
  • Cold foods (to reduce inflammation and discomfort): Cold foods can help to reduce inflammation and discomfort after a root canal treatment. Examples of cold foods include smoothies, yoghurt, and ice cream. Just be sure to avoid eating anything too cold or hard, as this can cause discomfort or irritate the treated tooth.

If you are experiencing discomfort or difficulty eating, contact your dentist for further guidance.

Foods to Avoid After a Root Canal

Now, let’s talk about what not to eat after a root canal treatment. Trust us. You’ll want to avoid these types of foods if you want your treated tooth to heal properly:

  • Hard and chewy foods: Nuts, seeds, and tough meats are a big no-no. These types of foods are like little hammers knocking on your treated tooth. Ouch!
  • Hot and spicy foods: Spicy food might be delicious, but it’s not so kind to your treated tooth. It’s best to give these types of foods a miss for a few days after your root canal treatment.
  • Sticky foods: Gum, taffy, and caramel might seem like fun treats, but they can be a nightmare for your treated tooth. These types of foods are sticky and can be difficult to remove from the teeth, leading to irritation.
  • Foods that require a lot of chewing: Burgers, steaks, and other foods that require a lot of chewing can put extra strain on your treated tooth. Sticking to softer foods for a few days after your root canal treatment is best.

So, there you have it! Just remember to listen to your body and avoid any foods that cause discomfort or irritation.

The Recovery Process

The recovery process after a root canal treatment is generally straightforward and involves a few simple steps to ensure proper healing. Here is an overview of what you can expect during the recovery process:

  1. Pain management: It is common to experience some discomfort after a root canal, but this can be managed with over-the-counter or prescription pain medication as recommended by your dentist.
  2. Oral hygiene: It is important to maintain good oral hygiene during the recovery process to prevent infection and promote healing. This includes brushing and flossing your teeth as usual but being careful not to irritate the treated tooth.
  3. Diet: After a root canal, it is important to eat soft, easy-to-chew foods that do not require a lot of biting or chewing. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that may irritate the treated tooth. It is also a good idea to avoid hot or spicy foods, as they can cause discomfort.
  4. Follow-up care: It is important to follow your dentist’s instructions for follow-up care, which may include returning for a follow-up appointment to check on the healing process and to have a permanent crown or filling placed on the treated tooth.

Overall, the recovery process after a root canal treatment is typically uneventful, and most people can return to their normal activities within a few days. If you have any questions or concerns during the recovery process, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist.

Eating Guidelines Following a Root Canal

Alrighty, so you’ve had a root canal, and you’re probably wondering when you can dig into that delicious sandwich you’ve been craving. Well, before you chow down, there are a few guidelines you’ll want to follow to ensure proper healing and avoid any mishaps.

  • Don’t eat until the numbness has worn off: This one might seem like a no-brainer, but it’s important to wait until the numbness from the local anaesthetic has worn off before you start eating. You don’t want to accidentally bite your cheek or tongue while you’re still numb!
  • Avoid biting your cheeks or tongue: Speaking of biting your cheek or tongue, it’s best to avoid these areas until you can feel temperature changes again. Hot and cold foods can cause discomfort if you can’t feel the temperature changes, so it’s best to stick to room-temperature foods for a bit.
  • Follow your dentist’s instructions and take any prescribed pain medication as directed: Your dentist will give you specific instructions on how to care for your treated tooth and what to expect during the recovery process. Be sure to follow these instructions and take any prescribed pain medication as directed.

I was at a really low point in my life, had an accident 2 years ago which broke 3 of my teeth and a bridge in between my 2 front top teeth. From that moment I became extremely conscious of going out, socialising and found my self withdrawn and depressed as I didn't know what to do.Then a friend told me about My Implant Dentist. I plucked up the courage and went for my first consultation at Mindarie Quinns dental practice with Dr Zaheer who explained all my options and advised all on 4 top and bottom. Not only Dr Zaheer but all the staff and doctors at both Mindarie and South Perth were amazing and extremely professional and made the whole process seemless.Having the treatment has given me back confidence and enabled me to socalise and do things with my family and friends that I couldn't do before.I would like to thank Dr Zaheer and all the team at My Implant Dentist for everything they have done for me and recommended them to everyone I speak to.I just can't stop smiling!!!

From the moment I walked in the door My Implant dentist were very caring and professional. As a dental nurse myself I knew I would be a very hard case as other specialists said they could not help me. After my first consultation with Dr Kent he was confident that he could help me and I was provided with a clear plan for my top and bottom all on four procedure. My new teeth are perfect and so natural looking. He has made the impossible possible for me. I can smile and eat the foods I love again and this has changed my life. Thank you so much to all staff and especially Dr Kent Tan who I can say is the best implant dentist in Perth.

I picked up”Moorooka Dental Care” contact details from the web. I rang for a few questions and the happy voice of Frances had calmed my anxiety down quickly!Dr Kadwa greeted me from the front bench, took me in for the X-ray, dental assessment, carefully explaining the procedure, answered my questions and quoted for the works. He offered to breakdown work items to suit with my needs. The quote was surprisingly very compatible with my previous quote from overseas. (I know I am going to have my dental treatment in the safe zone, most medical advances in Australia). The implant work went smoothly, so smooth that the team had to remind me “Done!”, well beyond my imagination. When he saw me off with the aftercare instructions, I could feel his professional manners with caring characters. I know he has done a few thousand implants but I still received the care of his first. Thanks Zaheer!I requested X-ray images, Fatimatu responded promptly with friendly chatting.I also would like to thank Dr Linh Trần who was in the operation team at the treatment and follow up cares.

Moorooka dental have been a pleasure to deal with. I did a bit of research into dental implants and most companies had hidden fees. I booked a consult and was contacted within a few hrs to get me in and get the ball rolling. I choose to go with he implants using my super. They helped me to do all the paperwork to release the money. Definitely a good dental clinic.
