Dental Implants Overseas – Procedure, Cost & Risks Of Dental Tourism

Considering dental treatment overseas?

Many Aussies wonder: “What’s the cheapest country for dental treatment abroad?”

Dental treatment is indeed expensive in Australia.

Those interested in Perth dental implants usually spend many months thinking about it. And what better way than to take the first step with a free dental implant consultation this month at our clinic?

If you’ve been thinking about dental implants, overseas options might have crossed your mind. They play into temptation: offering affordable prices and marketed to you as “dental holidays”.

It all sounds beautiful and relaxing… on the surface.

Let’s explore if medical holidays are worth considering.

We’ve created a detailed guide for you that focuses on All-on-4 dental implant costs abroad, its associated risks, and comparative costs that you might have overlooked.

Dental Implant Procedure

But before we discuss dental tourism, you should know about dental implant procedures and how to choose the right dental clinic in any country.

A dental implant procedure varies depending upon the type of implant and your jawbone’s condition. They’re surgically fitted in your jawbone, which acts as the roots of the missing or broken teeth. They don’t slip, make noise, or damage a bone as they’re made with titanium, a highly preferred dental material.

Who Needs a Dental Implant?

You can consider the idea of getting dental implants overseas if you’re facing the following issues:

  • Missing or broken teeth.
  • Oral health problems.
  • Can’t or don’t want to wear dentures.
  • Speech impediment due to missing teeth

Cost Of A Dental Implant Overseas

The cost of dental implants overseas in countries like Bali, Thailand, and India varies from dentist to dentist; however, the average price is quite inexpensive as compared to Australian dental clinics.

But apart from implant surgery, other factors are associated with the idea of dental implants overseas, such as the treating dentist abroad. The major ones include flight fare, food, accommodation, post-treatment medicines, and local travelling. Moreover, you can’t overlook the loss of income due to your absence from work.

In the case of auxiliary surgery, an additional cost of anesthesia and best maxillofacial surgeons has to be borne by you.

Comparative Prices of Overseas Dental Implants

Bali, Thailand, and India are among the most researched overseas dental implant and All-on-4 locations. Let’s find out how much the procedure costs.

Please note that all the prices mentioned are in AUD (Australian Dollar), provided as a general guide only, and are not meant to be binding. All dental procedures require your dentist to accurately assess your unique medical needs before providing you with a cost estimate.

Bali

A single dental implant in Bali costs between $2,500 – $2,800. The average cost of flight and accommodation will be $500 and $1,000 respectively, totalling the entire cost to $4,300 approximately.

Replacing all teeth on one jaw can cost up to $10,00 AUD in Bali. However, cheap acrylic (plastic) materials are often used for dental prostheses, which can cause them to fail within the first 6 months.

So you might find yourself in an Australian dentist’s office sooner than you’d like. In most cases, the Australian dentist can’t fix the botched overseas dental treatment and has to start from scratch.

Thailand

The cost of an implant procedure in Thailand is between $2,400 – $2,600. The average price of flight and accommodation will be $500 and $1,000 respectively, totalling the entire cost to $4,100 approximately.

India

The cost of an implant procedure in India is between $4,500 – $4,800. The average price of flight and accommodation will be $1,200 and $1,500 respectively, totalling the entire cost to $7,500 approximately.

Many people considering India might be lured in by affordable price tags and treatment promises at a fraction of the price of local procedures.

However, when returning back home, you might find that the implant treatments received overseas can have long-term problems. You want your teeth to last for the next 20 years and not just 6 months.

Risks of Dental Tourism

There are several risks involved in getting dental implants abroad at lower prices than in Australia. Some of them are listed below.

ADA Against Overseas Dental Work

The Australian Dental Association has spoken out against overseas dental treatments. Deputy Chairman of the Oral Health Committee Dr. Michael Foley says, “While you may save money in the short-term, things might go wrong, and all those predicted savings can suddenly evaporate, costing more than the holiday itself.”

No Regulation Over the Use of Dental Material

There are no strict regulations and compliance over the proper use of dental material for making implants. This means they can be of poor quality and breakable nature.

Contrary to this, the Australian dental care industry has to comply with all the policies and measures. This means it’s safer to get the surgery done in Australia.

Poor Hygiene Practice

Dental hygiene practices in the cheapest country for dental implants may not be of the same standards as in Australia. It’s very important to keep the non-operating areas clean lest patients can catch an infection.

Also, ensure the dental team unwrap sterile pouches of instruments in front of your eyes as each patient is supposed to get a new set at no additional cost.

Travelling Back is Unsafe

You shouldn’t catch a flight immediately after surgery as there’s a high possibility of life-threatening blood clotting.

This consequently means an add-on living expense and more days off work.

No Access to Previous Medical History/ Records

As you’ll be consulting a dentist for dental implants overseas for the first time, they won’t be able to refer to your medical history properly. Due to the inability to access your previous records, they might be unable to prescribe you the right medicines, which can put your life at risk.

Dental Implants Overseas Other Facts

Alternatives to dental tourism: Instead of going overseas for dental treatment, there are several cost-effective options available in Australia. These include public dental clinics, which offer reduced fees for those who are eligible, and private dental payment plans, which allow you to pay for treatment in installments.

Quality of dental care abroad: The quality of dental care in countries like Bali, Thailand, and India may vary. While some dental clinics may have highly trained and skilled practitioners, others may not meet the same standards as those in Australia. It is important to do thorough research and ask for references before committing to treatment abroad.

Recovery and follow-up care: After getting dental treatment abroad, you will need to manage your own implant post-treatment care and follow-up appointments. This may be more difficult if you are in a different country, as you will need to coordinate with your treating dentist remotely.

Insurance coverage: It is important to check with your health insurance provider to see if they will cover dental treatment abroad. Many plans do not cover treatment outside of Australia, so you may need to pay for the costs out of pocket.

Legal recourse: If you experience subpar treatment or complications from dental treatment abroad, your options for legal recourse may be limited. It may be difficult to pursue legal action in a foreign country, and you may not have the same protections as you would in Australia.

Cultural and language barriers: Seeking dental treatment in a foreign country can be challenging due to cultural and language barriers. It is important to communicate clearly with your treating dentist and make sure you understand all aspects of your treatment plan.

Final Thoughts

I was at a really low point in my life, had an accident 2 years ago which broke 3 of my teeth and a bridge in between my 2 front top teeth. From that moment I became extremely conscious of going out, socialising and found my self withdrawn and depressed as I didn't know what to do.Then a friend told me about My Implant Dentist. I plucked up the courage and went for my first consultation at Mindarie Quinns dental practice with Dr Zaheer who explained all my options and advised all on 4 top and bottom. Not only Dr Zaheer but all the staff and doctors at both Mindarie and South Perth were amazing and extremely professional and made the whole process seemless.Having the treatment has given me back confidence and enabled me to socalise and do things with my family and friends that I couldn't do before.I would like to thank Dr Zaheer and all the team at My Implant Dentist for everything they have done for me and recommended them to everyone I speak to.I just can't stop smiling!!!

I picked up”Moorooka Dental Care” contact details from the web. I rang for a few questions and the happy voice of Frances had calmed my anxiety down quickly!Dr Kadwa greeted me from the front bench, took me in for the X-ray, dental assessment, carefully explaining the procedure, answered my questions and quoted for the works. He offered to breakdown work items to suit with my needs. The quote was surprisingly very compatible with my previous quote from overseas. (I know I am going to have my dental treatment in the safe zone, most medical advances in Australia). The implant work went smoothly, so smooth that the team had to remind me “Done!”, well beyond my imagination. When he saw me off with the aftercare instructions, I could feel his professional manners with caring characters. I know he has done a few thousand implants but I still received the care of his first. Thanks Zaheer!I requested X-ray images, Fatimatu responded promptly with friendly chatting.I also would like to thank Dr Linh Trần who was in the operation team at the treatment and follow up cares.
